Center assists food companies for 20 years

September 2003 marked the 20th anniversary of UNL's Food Processing Center, which assists food companies with new product development, market research and other services.

With the center's help, the number of food processing businesses in Nebraska has grown from 220 in 1983 to 350 in 2003. The center has assisted food businesses in all 50 states and nearly 24 countries, said Steve Taylor, director of the center.

The center was established during a challenging time for America's farm economy to help add value to Nebraska's agricultural commodities, Taylor said. Nearly 70 percent of the entrepreneurs that began with the center's help remain in business today.
