NU gains a new president, other leaders for new year

The last year brought a new president to the University of Nebraska, a new senior vice chancellor to UNL and several other important new faces in leadership roles.

• James "J.B." Milliken became president of the University of Nebraska on Aug. 1. He is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of UNL, where he earned a degree in English in 1979. He attended New York University School of Law, graduating in 1983. Since 1998, Milliken has been associated with the University of North Carolina, where most recently he was senior vice president for university affairs. He previously was vice president for public affairs and university advancement.

Before joining UNC, Milliken was vice president and corporate secretary for the University of Nebraska beginning in 1988. Before joining NU, Milliken practiced law at a New York City law firm and had also worked in Washington as legislative assistant to Rep. Virginia Smith (R-Neb.).

• Barbara Couture joined UNL on Aug. 15 as senior vice chancellor for academic affairs, UNL's chief academic officer and second to the chancellor in the university's organizational chart. The office provides leadership and support for academic programs and serves as chief advocate for faculty and students. She most recently was dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Washington State University in Pullman.

She earned her B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.

She succeeds Richard Edwards, who served from April 1997 until the end of 2003, when he returned to the teaching and research faculty. David Brinkerhoff was interim senior vice chancellor for academic affairs.

• William Nunez joined UNL in September 2003 as director of Institutional Research and Planning. The office provides data and analysis to support academic management, evaluation and planning. The office is also responsible for the campus physical master plan, campus space planning and operation of examination services, which provides testing and scoring services. The director reports to the chancellor and is part of UNL's senior administrative team. Nunez joined UNL from the University of Louisville.

• Priscilla Grew became director of the NU State Museum in August 2003. A professor of geosciences, Grew was vice chancellor for research from 1993-1999. She also continues as UNL's coordinator supervising tribal repatriations under the Native American Graves Preservation and Repatriation Act, or NAGPRA.

• Bill Callahan was named head football coach on Jan. 9 by Athletic Director Steve Pederson. Before joining the Big Red, Callahan was head coach of the NFL's Oakland Raiders. He is the 27th head coach in the 114 years of Husker football. He replaces Frank Solich.
