Student quilt art exhibit seeks entries

New generations, a genesis of ideas, and a traditional art come together in ReGenerations, a juried exhibition of quilts and quilted garments open to all University of Nebraska students.

Held in conjunction with the International Quilt Study Center's 2007 biennial academic symposium, ReGenerations encourages students to consider the ages old quilting craft as a medium appropriate for their own creative exploration.

ReGenerations encourages students to take the basic quilt form - layers of fabric or fabric-like materials that are attached with stitches - and to blend it with their own ideas and backgrounds to produce a fresh, creative expression. The exhibition will spotlight the way students have learned and re-interpreted quiltmaking for their own generations, drawing upon historical or contemporary traditions.

Students may enter work individually or as collaborative teams. Prizes will be awarded for the most outstanding works created.

The deadline for entries is Dec. 20. The exhibition will be held from Feb. 19 to March 2, 2007 in the Rotunda Gallery, Nebraska Union.

Full information on ReGenerations is available at www.quiltstudy.org/symposium including the Call for Entries, entry form and many links to visual and educational resources.

The 2007 IQSC Symposium, Traditions and Trajectories: Education and the Quiltmaker, will investigate the many contexts in which the quiltmakers's art is learned, studied, applied and handed on. The International Quilt Study Center is in the Department of Textiles, Clothing and Design in the College of Education and Human Sciences at UNL.

Its collection of nearly 2,000 quilts is one of the largest in the world and serves as a foundation for the Center's research into quiltmaking traditions worldwide. Located in the Home Economics Building on UNL's East Campus at 35th and Holdrege, the IQSC is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday for tours.
