Johnny Carson gives $5.3 million gift
Entertainment and television icon and University of Nebraska alumnus Johnny Carson has announced a gift of $5.3 million to the University of Nebraska Foundation to support the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts Department of Theatre Arts.

A piece of university history
In honor of Veterans Day, we feature Helen L. Sagl, a Lincoln native who received a bachelors degree in education and a master of arts degree in educational psychology from the University of Nebraska. She joined the Womens Auxiliary Army Corps (later called the Womens Army Corps) during World War II. At Fort Des Moines, Iowa, where this picture was taken, she was one of the first women to graduate from officer candidate school, in August 1942. She was a member of the First Regiment, Fourth Company.

Exhibit features insects, patterns
Jennifer Angus of the University of Wisconsin, Madison, will install her newest work, "Carpet Beetles: Patterns from the Orient," at the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery. It will be on display from Nov. 19 to Dec. 17 on large, low, floor pedestals. This is a departure from her work of the past four years, in which she created installations composed of insects pinned to a wall in repeating patterns.

McFerrin's jazz style coming back to Lied
Improvisational jazz singer Bobby McFerrin will return to the Lied Center for Performing Arts with a 7:30 p.m. show on Nov. 12.
Theatre presents 'House of Blue Leaves'
UNL Theatre's University Theatre completes its fall season with John Guare's dark comedy The House of Blue Leaves, directed by guest artist Gil Lazier. A sneak preview performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 17, with regular performances at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 18-20 and Dec. 1-4. All performances are in Howell Theatre in the Temple Building.
Free at 6 series opens with modern dance troupe
This month the Lied Center for Performing Arts will begin a new series, Free at 6, to create awareness of local artists and provide free arts events.
