Great Plains Art Museum hosts 'Last Year on the Farm' exhibit

Texas artist V.... Vaughan's daily plein air paintings documenting the last days on her family's multi-generational farm will be presented in "Last Year on the Farm," an exhibit at UNL's Great Plains Art Museum Jan. 2 through March 14.

A "First Friday" reception for "Last Year on the Farm" is 5-7 p.m. Jan. 4.

Vaughan has lived and painted on her farm northeast of Austin, Texas, for 30 years, but the land is now in the hands of suburban developers. Three-hundred sixty-five paintings reveal the seasons of change in her last year on these 200 acres of farmland. The series includes Vaughan's "24-in-24" challenges representing one of the four seasons. Twenty-four paintings in 24 hours may seem daunting, but Vaughan said it wasn't a major challenge to her: "All I had to do from my studio deck was turn, and a new farm painting presented itself to me."

The series reflects all the seasons of change and appreciation of daily cycles Vaughan has experienced in the past year as she prepares to move from her familiar home. She said she hopes the series will inspire awareness of rural instability. "One of my goals for all these little paintings is to draw attention to small-time farming as a great (and) honorable way of life," Vaughn said.
