Harris, Blackout present jazz fusion Feb. 4 at Lied Center

Jazz, acoustic music and progressive sounds will be fused into one performance as Stefon Harris and his band Blackout perform at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 4 on the main stage at the Lied Center for Performing Arts.

As a young musician studying classical music at the Eastman School of Music, Harris never imagined playing jazz, that is until he heard Charlie Parker. Inspired by Parker and serious jazz lessons at Eastman, Harris changed his musical direction. He moved to New York City to study at the Manhattan School of Music and earned a bachelor of arts in classical music and a masters in jazz performance.

Harris is a jazz vibraphone master, marimba player and a composer. He has earned a number of honors, including Grammy nominations for best jazz albums, "The Grand Unification Theory (2003) and "Kindred" (2001).

Harris' latest project, Blackout, released its debut CD, "Evolution," in 2004 and has been touring steadily since. The band features Casey Benjamin (alto sax), Marc Cary (keyboards), Darryl Hall (bass), and Terreon Gully (drums) and has performed to sold-out crowds at The Kennedy Center and North Sea Jazz Festival. Their sound is soulful jazz with rhythm and blues and hip-hop influences.

Besides performing, Harris conducts more than 100 clinics and lectures at schools and universities throughout every year. Harris is Artist in Residence at San Francisco Performances and was previously Artist in Residence at the Isabelle Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston.

Vince Learned of the UNL School of Music will present a pre-performance talk 30 minutes prior to curtain in the Lied Center's Steinhart Room. Seating is limited.

Tickets for the performance are $36, and half price for UNL students with a valid NCard and youth 18 and under.

For information, call the Lied ticket office at 472-4747.
